Guide to the first boss of The Venomous Abyss

Updated

First boss of the raid, currently harder than the second and third. Two phases separated by an intermission at 50% health.

The core mechanic is the Raised Amani, adds summoned in waves by the Restless Amani casts. On spawn they carry an absorb that only takes magic damage: physical damage does not reduce it. While the absorb holds the add is unkillable, ignores aggro and walks in a straight line toward the Soulcoil Well at the center of the arena. If an add reaches the well, or a player dies inside it, Soulcoil Rite fires: 5 energy to the boss, immediate raid damage and a stacking DoT. Energy also builds passively and at 100 the boss enrages, so every Rite shortens the time available. Breaking the absorb is about being able to kill the add and, more importantly, about being able to control it: once the absorb drops the add is subject to aggro again, and taunts, slows, roots and stuns decide where it goes. On heavy waves the priority is therefore breaking shields and slowing adds, not killing them.

There are three supporting mechanics. A debuff that must be carried to the edge of the arena and dispelled there, because on removal it leaves a pool where the player stands. A tank frontal whose damage falls off with the distance travelled, so the tank moves away from the raid and the raid from the tank. And, on Mythic, an add that spawns inside the well and deals constant damage while alive: it is killed by a team of five who descend at the center, with the caveat that anyone who leaves cannot go back in.

The intermission at 50% opens with a long boss channel during which nothing happens and she can be hit freely. Once the channel ends the boss disappears and stays away until the two adds she summoned are dead, so most of the phase is not boss damage. In the same window the corpses of previously killed adds must be burned, because any left on the ground are repossessed and get back up empowered.

TL;DR

What to do

Everyone

  • Phase 1, 2 and intermission: open the Raised Amani absorb with magic damage as soon as they spawn — physical doesn't consume it. This takes priority over everything else.
  • Phase 1, 2 and intermission: stop adds from reaching the well using stuns, roots and slows. These work both with and without the shield up.
  • Intermission: half the raid soaks Hungering Pyre, the other half carries their flames onto the isolated corpses.
  • Phase 2: never go near the center.

Tank

  • Always: tank swap on Hollowing Strikes stacks.
  • Phase 1 and 2: move away from the raid during Possession Barrage.

Healer

  • Phase 1 and 2: dispel Essence Rend only once the target has moved to the edge.
  • Phase 1 and 2: cooldowns ready for Soulcoil Ignition and every Soulcoil Rite.
  • Phase 2: constant damage for the entire duration, with no let-up.

DPS

  • Phase 1 and 2: magic damage on shields first, then kill the adds.
  • Phase 1 (Mythic): a team of 5 (1 healer, 4 DPS) enters the well, interrupts and kills the Drowned Echo.
  • Intermission: burst the boss during Ritual of Awakening, then the Echo of Jawae casting Soul Transfer.
  • End of phase 1: push to 50% to skip the next Restless Amani wave.

Detail

Composition requirements

Gravebound Advance absorbs magic damage equal to 25% of the add's maximum health. While it holds, the add is unkillable, ignores aggro and runs for the well. A predominantly physical raid will not clear this check.

You also need CC on multiple targets, coordinated dispels, and AoE burst for the 50% push.

Energy and Soulcoil Rite

Nek'zali gains energy passively: this is the real timer of the fight. Every Soulcoil Rite adds 5 and applies a stacking DoT; on Heroic and Mythic it comes with Ritual Burn, increasing damage from subsequent Rites by 15% per stack.

What triggers a Rite. Two things, both stated in the Soulcoil Well journal entry: "the well hungrily absorbs any spirit that reaches its surface and any player that dies within, invoking the Soulcoil Rite". So either an add reaching the well, or a player dying inside it. In the second case the intermediate step is Soulcoiled, which drags the player's soul toward the well and sacrifices it on arrival.

Tank abilities (phase 1 and 2)

  • Hollowing Strikes — periodic damage and −5% healing and absorption received per stack. Tank swap.
  • Possession Barrage — channeled at the primary target. The echoes explode on impact and hit the raid, with damage decreasing over the distance travelled.

Raid abilities (phase 1 and 2)

  • Essence Rend — traps several players, pulls them in for 5 seconds, then flings them out. On expiry or removal it spawns a Latent Cultist at the player's location. The pools stay where you leave them.
  • Soulcoil Ignition — the boss invokes Soulcoil Rite repeatedly for several seconds. Defensive cooldown window. Anguished Echoes emerge during the channel, dealing damage and knockback in a tight radius.

Restless Amani (all phases)

  • They wake from the sarcophagi placed around the perimeter of the room. Not all of them open: each cast activates only some, two per wave in PTR testing, and the ones involved show a lid-opening animation a few seconds before the spawn. Watching the sarcophagi rather than the boss is how you know where they'll come from.
  • On spawn they carry Gravebound Advance: while the barrier holds they cannot be killed, they ignore aggro and run for the well.
  • Once the shield breaks they behave as normal aggro-based adds.
  • They take every form of CC in both states.
  • On death they burst into Corpse Blight: raid damage and a stacking DoT. Avoid killing them all at the same instant.
  • Corpses remain on the ground and are dealt with during the intermission.

Priority order: break the shield, stop the advance, kill.

The well — Grasping Depths, Mythic

The boss spawns a Drowned Echo inside the well that periodically pulls players toward the center and deals constant damage while alive.

A team of 5 stands at the center and descends. Inside:

  • the Drowned Echo must be interrupted and killed;
  • the beams from the boss and the moving orbs must be dodged;
  • staying too long accumulates Swirling Spirit and Immortal Coil;
  • if the Drowned Echo survives it can use Soulcoiler's Curse, ejecting everyone inside and leaving them Soulcoiled;
  • on exit you receive Soul Exhaustion: +300% damage from the well, so no re-entry.

Phase 1

Cycle: Essence Rend with dispels at the edge, Possession Barrage on the tank, a Restless Amani wave, and the well team descending in parallel. Repeats until 50%.

Approaching 50% it is worth pushing to skip the next Amani wave. If the timer isn't beatable it must be called in advance: the raid absorbs one extra wave and phases after.

Intermission — Ritual of Awakening

The boss retreats toward the well and begins a long cast during which nothing happens: she can be hit freely. At the end of the channel the boss disappears and cannot be targeted again until the two adds are dead, so the boss-damage window is the channel only, not the whole intermission.

Two Echo of Jawae are summoned, protected by Tether of Awakening, which grants full damage immunity. Only the one casting Soul Transfer is targetable, verifiable from the boss frame. The other is immune.

When the echo becomes active, its first action is Hungering Pyre:

  • fire damage split among players within 10 yards, requiring roughly 10 soakers;
  • anyone not hit receives Slithering Flame, a flame that chases them;
  • on expiry the flame erupts into Cremation, incinerating corpses and Restless Amani within 4 yards.

The non-soakers are therefore the cleanup tool. Unburned corpses become Vessel of Awakening and are repossessed.

Throughout the ritual the boss keeps casting Restless Amani.

Phase 2 — Uncoiling

The well overflows and the raid takes constant damage until the boss dies.

  • The center is lethal.
  • Possession Barrage, Hollowing Strikes, Essence Rend and Restless Amani all return, on a worn raid carrying accumulated Soulcoil Rite stacks.
  • Invoke calls the Latent Cultists to reposition around the well with Entwined Step: the pools move and the arena shrinks. On Mythic, Invoke interrupts all casts in progress and silences anyone attempting to interrupt it for 3 seconds.

Call this in advance: if the second Echo of Jawae doesn't die in time and the Restless Amani wave is incoming, either beat the timer and phase before the spawn, or stop DPS on the echo and accept the damage from a Drowned Echo that can no longer be reached.

PTR testing notes

In the testing we watched, the raid reached 3-4% without closing, with phase 2 turning into an almost continuous add spawn. That's a single pull, not a verdict on the boss: kill logs exist and Nek'zali's health pool isn't large, so the burn is well within reach. The takeaway is a different one — the bottleneck sits in magic damage on shields rather than damage on the boss.

Assignment checklist

  • Well team: 1 healer and 4 DPS, with backups.
  • Who opens shields with magic damage at each corner.
  • Soak / non-soak split for Hungering Pyre.
  • Peripheral corpses assigned to flame carriers.
  • Dispel location for Essence Rend.
  • Defensive cooldowns for Soulcoil Ignition.
  • Who calls the 50% push.
